Backwaters Villa
The backwaters are a natural transition between the land and the sea, supporting it’s own unique ecosystem. The backwaters resort attempts to be a part of this landscape, being situated on a site that almost touches the water. The sea shell became an inspiration for the form: the master-plan is based on a radial spiral that staggers and fans out towards the edge of the land. With a central congregation space that leads to windy access spines to reach the private villas, the fan-shaped array is responsive to the movement of the sun, and the local wind conditions, making sure that the ambiance of open spaces remains pleasant through the day. The theme of the sea-shell is carried forward on the scale of the individual structures as well, with the club house having a similar syntax of a central space that fans out to more private areas that open into the landscape. The site gently slopes from the entrance to the last villa, ensuring that views are unobstructed for every space in the resort. The bright exposed brick walls juxtaposed with metal-framed glass panes, stand in a complementary contrast with the greens and browns of the estuarine landscape.
